Should You Paint Your Kitchen Cabinets or Replace Them?

A dated kitchen is one of the most common reasons people call us, and the first thing worth working out is whether you have a paint problem or a kitchen problem. They look the same from a distance and they are completely different projects.

Check the Boxes, Not the Doors

Open a cabinet and look at the carcass. If the boxes are solid wood or good-quality plywood, square, and firmly attached to the wall, they are worth keeping regardless of how dated the doors look. If they are particle board that has swelled under the sink, sagging shelves, or boxes coming apart at the joints, paint will not fix that and you are looking at replacement.

Ask Whether the Layout Actually Works

This is the honest test. If your complaint is the colour, the finish, or the hardware, painting solves it. If your complaint is that the fridge is in the wrong place, there is no counter space beside the oven, or you want an island where there is not one, no amount of paint changes that. Paint fixes how a kitchen looks. It does not fix how a kitchen works.

What Painting Cabinets Actually Involves

It is not the same as painting a wall, and the difference is why it takes longer than people expect. Doors and drawer fronts come off and get labelled. Hardware comes off. Everything gets degreased, because kitchen cabinets carry years of invisible cooking film that paint will not bond to. Then scuff sanding, a bonding primer made for cabinetry, and a cabinet-grade finish that cures hard. Doors dry flat rather than hung, which is why you will see them out on drop cloths in our photos.

The Finish Is Where Corners Get Cut

Cabinets get touched more than any other painted surface in a house. Ordinary wall paint on a cabinet door will show fingerprints within weeks and start chipping at the handles inside a year. The products that hold up cost more and take longer to cure fully. If a quote for cabinets looks unusually cheap, this is normally where the money was saved.
